Really, people? I’ve heard so many conspiracy theories about the reason/s behind Tyson Gay’s victory in the Diamond League 100m race against the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt…

Could it be…just maybe…that Usain either:

a) Overdid it just a tad the weekend before in Negril?
b) Was having a bad day?
c) Is simply human.
d) All of the above

I’m gonna go with d: all of the above.

I was at the hairdresser on Saturday and, I kid thee not, women nearly came to blows over the reason behind Usain’s loss. The man has had an unprecedented 2 year-long winning streak and, I suppose, we’ve all come to expect him to maintain that.

But people! Usain’s only human! There will come a time when he may not perform at his best…It’s almost as if we’ve put him – not just on a pillar – but among the gods and goddesses on Mount Olympus. Untouchable, immortal and incredibly powerful.

Give the guy a break. He’s done what no other human being has done thus far; running unbelievably blistering times – and, as we Jamaicans know – he seems to be capable of going much faster, he’s been unbeaten since 2008, he’s capable of performing just as well in the 100m and 200m events…the list goes on.

It’s not worth fighting over…Usain, you’ve done us incredibly proud thus far and, if you’re having an off day, so what? We know you’ll be back!

If not, then so be it…you have made an indelible mark on the face of athletics locally and globally!
